Katie Coker Offers Tips for Getting Scholarships

By Katie Coker on Friday, March 11, 2011

I’m getting more and more anxious waiting to see what scholarships I have received!  The last thing that I want to do is be a financial burden on my family when it comes to the cost of my college. I know they’ll be very relieved if I am presented with some locally funded scholarships that I applied for (if you don’t know what scholarships to apply for, your school counselors are always available).

Before filling out scholarship applications, I was taught some scholarship etiquette, which I’ll share with you:

  • First, always write in pen.
  • Second, spell everything right.
  • Third, create a resume that will leave the scholarship voters stunned, but don’t lie.
  • Last, take your time because whiteout doesn’t look good.

It isn’t just local funded scholarships -- all seniors need to check with the college they plan to attend to see if they are eligible for any of that college's scholarships.  The most important scholarship to sign up for that has changed many people’s lives is the lottery scholarship. You will be making a HUGE mistake if you do not sign up for this amazing scholarship. It was said that last year every person that applied received the lottery scholarship – and since September 2009, more than $137 million has been doled out to applicants. So, seniors get busy, and don’t be lazy!
