Job Title: Fiber Optic Drop And Install Technician

For Andrew Blaylock, the journey to the high-demand fiber optics industry wasn't originally planned. He started college aiming for a career in IT and earned an associate degree in computer information systems. After working a desk job related to his degree, he realized he was made for more hands-on work. When that opportunity arose, he seized it and never looked back.
In his current position, every day is different. From climbing into a bucket truck to run aerial cables to installing fiber inside homes and businesses, Andrew’s work is anything but repetitive.
“There’s strong earning potential, especially as you gain experience,” Andrew said. “The hands-on nature of the job and the daily problem-solving keep it dynamic and fulfilling.”
Andrew also enjoys what he can offer his community through his work.
“I love being able to provide high-speed internet to people who have never had access to it before.” Andrew said. “Growing up, I didn’t have fast enough internet to play online games with my friends. Now, I get to give others an experience I never had, and that’s incredibly rewarding.”
While learning the network was difficult at first, Andrew credits his growth to strong teamwork, persistence, and ongoing learning.
“The job keeps you moving and thinking, which helps prevent burnout and keeps things interesting,” Andrew said. “I started out making a competitive salary, and there’s a clear path for advancement.”
