Hometown: Nashville (Arkansas)

Age: 20

Higher Education: Associate of Applied Science in General Technology from the University of Arkansas - Cossatot Community College

Job Title: Maintenance Millwright

Employer: Weyerhaeuser/Dierks Lumber Mill

Mason Sillavan's journey began early. Growing up around blue-collar workers, he took his first job as a mechanical apprentice in a shop that serviced 18-wheelers. His interest in industrial work grew during his junior year at Nashville High School when he enrolled in an industrial maintenance program through UA Cossatot. A conversation with longtime Weyerhaeuser employee Oather Jackson further fueled his curiosity.

“I decided to apply with Weyerhaeuser after researching the company and seeing how well they take care of their employees,” Mason said.

Now a magna cum laude graduate with an Associate of Applied Science in General Technology, Mason excels in his role. Whether it’s prepping machinery mid-week or handling major repairs over the weekend, his job keeps him engaged and constantly learning.

“Every day I leave feeling like I was able to make something work that was broken [and that] is rewarding,” Mason said.

Mason credits much of his success to hands-on learning experiences, including farm labor, welding and volunteer work with the Bingen Fire Department. He’s also proud of the financial freedom his career provides. With college paid for through his internship, Mason has already purchased a truck and side-by-side, and is investing in his future, all before turning 21. His story proves that a strong work ethic, the right training and a willingness to get your hands dirty can lead to a stable and rewarding future.
