After learning about the industry during high school, Josh Crook decided to pursue a career as a CNC Machinist. He learned basic machining knowledge in both manual and CNC machining, which proved that he had a firm grasp on the basics of the role.

“Many of my peers find it difficult to find a job in the field that they studied and worked hard to learn in college,” Josh says. “I am very lucky and thankful to have this opportunity.”

His workday starts with warming up his machine and making sure it has enough coolant for the day. He does a “slow run” to make sure everything is running smoothly before getting started on work orders and prepping the machine for the next job.

“I like that I am learning how to use different machines and working to make multiple different parts across multiple machines, and it’s not just making one part over and over,” he says.

What does a CNC machinist do?

A computer numerical control (CNC) machinist runs computer-operated equipment to create machine parts, tools and other mass-produced items. He or she may work in a machine shop or in the manufacturing industry and most of the parts they create are used in the automotive, power, aerospace and manufacturing industries.

Responsibilities

► Ensure equipment is set up and working properly

► Conduct quality control checks on machines and report any issues

► Install mechanical components in production equipment

► Mount attachments or tools onto production equipment

► Remove products or workpieces from production equipment

Education Needed

No prior work experience is required for entry-level positions. Most people in this career have a high school diploma or equivalent and will undergo one to 12 months of on-the-job training.
