What Kind of College is Right for You?

Read each question and circle the letter that best describes you, and then add up your grand total using the answer key at the bottom of the page.

1. I am most comfortable in:

  1. Large groups of people. I don’t have to be friends with everyone to have a good time.
  2. Bigger groups of people I know. Meeting a few new people is great, but I really like to know the people around me.
  3. Small groups of close friends.

2. When I’m in class, I:

  1. Always sit close to the front and answer lots of questions.
  2. Sit in the back row and listen to the teacher.
  3. Answer questions that I know, but otherwise stay pretty quiet.

3. I am usually:

  1. Relaxed and laid-back.
  2. Involved in an activity.
  3. Energetic and fun.

4. When it comes to my family, I:

  1. Hang out with them every weekend.
  2. Love them, but sometimes they can be a little much.
  3. Try and spend time with them, but I hang out with my friends a lot, too.

5. When I try and picture where I’ll be in 10 years, I:

  1. Have an idea of where I’d like to be, but it’s not set in stone.
  2. I don’t want to know. I’m along for the ride.
  3. Know exactly where I’ll be in life.

6. After I graduate, I know that I want to work:

  1. In a very specific field that requires a very specific degree.
  2. In one general area, like medicine, but I’m not really sure which part most interests me.
  3. Somewhere, but other than that, I’m not sure what I want to do.

7. When I’m not studying, I like to:

  1. Have fun! It doesn’t matter what I’m doing as long as I’m with my friends.
  2. Listen to music, read a book, or surf the internet.
  3. Go with the flow. I’m just as happy going to the movies with my friends as I am hanging out by myself.

8. When I get to college, I imagine I’ll be most interested in:

  1. Student government, honors societies and volunteer organizations.
  2. Sports and other activities that get the whole campus excited.
  3. Special interest groups which bring together people with common, unique interests.

9. I manage my time:

  1. Very well. I love to use a planner and keep myself on task.
  2. Well enough. Usually I’m right on time, but sometimes I run a little late.
  3. In spurts. Most often, though, I’m so caught up with what’s going on around me I forget to keep track of it!

10. I have a car, and I plan on:

  1. Taking it to school, but probably walking more often than I use it. Driving everywhere is a real hassle.
  2. Leaving it at home. Why would I need a car, anyway?
  3. Bringing it with me! All the stores and great places to hang out are far way from where I’ll be living.

24-30 points: You love meeting new people and having adventures, even if you’re still a little unclear about what you want to do in life. You’re pretty much OK with anything life throws your way as long as it offers excitement. Your perfect campus has tons of people, a freedom-loving atmosphere and a variety of educational choices so you can explore before you settle into a major. Look at large liberal arts campuses that provide great academic opportunities at home and abroad.

17-23 points: Your even-keel personality makes you the perfect candidate for almost any type of school. You enjoy the thrill of meeting new people and pushing your boundaries as long as you’ve got a stable group of friends and family to return to. You’re an active learner, even if you aren’t big on in-class discussions. Keep your eyes on medium-sized schools that have the opportunities of a large campus with the atmosphere of a small one.

10-16 points: In school, you like to be the best and excel in discussion-based courses. Outside of the classroom, you keep your friends and family close and participate in activities that further your life plan. Choose small colleges that specialize in your interest—you’ll be at home in smaller, intimate classes where you’ll get lots of individualized attention. If your major is only offered at large institutions, don’t worry. There’s a chance that even though you’re on a huge campus, a small department will create a hands-on atmosphere that works for you.
