Cabot Works to Keep Neighborly Appeal

"We are the second fastest growing city in Arkansas,” according to Mayor Stubby Stumbaugh.” With a population that rocketed more than 80 percent during the 1990s, Cabot works hard to keep its neighborly appeal. The mayor is proud of the folks that work here. “Our school system is great because we have great teachers, and our fire and police department are outstanding.” This summer all three organizations were tested when a fire destroyed the recently built Junior High North School for seventh and eighth graders prior to the start of school.

Nearly 8,000 students attend the city’s seven elementary schools, two middle schools (fifth and sixth grade), one junior high and high school, according to Mayor Stubby Stumbaugh. More than 1,200 students were displaced at a time most would be shopping for school supplies. “If disasters test your character the folks here passed with A plusses. Everyone came out to help even as flames took over the school. From the Wal-Mart and Sonic, neighbors and kids, it was absolutely amazing; it just confirmed what I’ve always known—this is the best city anywhere.” A quick reorganization of space at Cabot High School, with the addition of temporary classrooms has students back in school. Work will begin immediately on a new school.

Cabot is of interest to everyone from singles to retirees because of the ability to get more house for your money. Luxury houses can be had from under $350,000. Golf enthusiasts will find the Mountain Springs and Cypress Creek courses at Greystone up to par. And for those who love to bait a hook, Greers Ferry Lake and the Little Red River are a short drive from Cabot.

“We have a very low crime rate. I know we are not immune to the activities that come with becoming bigger,” explained Stumbaugh, “but this community continues to take a progressive, proactive approach to maintain a positive quality of life.”
